Internet marketing, digital marketing, online marketing are all terms frequently used to describe the activity of either doing business online of promoting your existing offline business through the medium of the internet.

- Flipping websites-creating and selling websites in a similar way you might flip “real” property
Starting an online business
There are many ways to start an online business including
- Becoming an affiliate for an existing online provider of goods or services such as Amazon, Clickbank and leading international companies;
- Creating your own products or services for sale primarily online;
- Content publishing and generating your income from an advertising program such as the Google Adsense program;
- Providing your services as a freelancer;
- Delivering courses and educational material online.
The list above is not an exhaustive one but will give you some idea of what is possible.
Failure rate
The idea of starting or running a business online is a seductive one.
Not having a boss to answer to, working when you want and wherever you want is a lure for many.
Don’t be fooled though.
The failure rate for start up businesses generally is very high with as many as 1 in 3 failing in the first 3 years.
The failure for online business is probably even higher although reliable statistics are hard to come by such is the ease with which you can start online.
It is this ease of entry that causes such a high rate of failure in our view as the barriers to entry are so low that doing business online is a magnet for the lazy, the fast buck merchants and those who want to take shortcuts and not build a real business.
In the offline world you will need to write a business plan, carry out market research and persuade a bank or financier to back you at a minimum.
You can get started online without much or any of these requirements.
